Gas safety

What to do if you smell gas

Act immediately

Open doors and windows, turn off the gas supply at the meter if safe to do so, avoid electrical switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Do not turn the gas supply back on until it has been checked. If you feel unwell, seek medical help and explain that you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide.

Once the immediate emergency has been made safe, a Gas Safe registered engineer can check and repair the appliance or pipework.
